Plot Summary:
Kadaisi Ulaga Por is a science fiction dystopian novel that depicts the society of a near future in which basic human needs like food, water, or fuel became lethal threats. In the face of imminent extinction, the nations are struggling over those resources in what is known as the “Last World War.”
The hero of the show, Vishal (Kalaiyarasan), is a soldier who is very patriotic and dedicated to safeguarding the country’s future. He is committed to protecting India's interests in the resource war that is being witnessed across the world today. But a twist crops up when Vishal learns that the true opponent is not only from outside his society but from the society itself, where corruption and moral decline are increasingly becoming the order of the day.
While on the war front, the Vishal clan meets Anu (Maya), a woman he has to fight within him between duty and love and between life and death.
In the course of the story telling, issues such as greed, immorality, and might and right are brought out in the movie. In the story, the author looks at the societal and moral issues that are likely to crop up when the future of humanity is on the line.
Themes and Message:
1. Scarcity of Resources:
Focusing on resource depletion, Kadaisi Ulaga Por deals with a rather profound issue that is present in the development of globalization. In the movie, the world has changed, and the wars are no longer fought over territories and even differences in ideologies but basic needs such as food and water. It gives out a strong message concerning the effects of non-adherence to environmental footprints and the increasing world demand for natural resources.2. Human Morality in Crisis:
In a nutshell, the film spiritually explores an age-old vital reality, which is the moral nature of man. When using the context of the show, what does happen to ethics when survival is now the ultimate goal? It is therefore not surprising to always find characters in Kadaisi Ulaga Por making some very difficult ethical decisions with war and survival diminishing their humane factors. The story of Vishal shows that warfare comes with various personal and social implications of the effects of war.
3. Corruption and Power:
Thus, although the external threats and war seem to be at the center of the plot, the film reveals the potential of internal threats from corrupt officials. They highlight political leaders, corporations, and the military as involved in the battles over resources and whether man is man’s greatest threat.
The love affair between Vishal and Anu is an extra story, but a subplot makes a movie or story richer. Anu symbolizes an entirely different perspective towards life, which is miles apart from the world of war Vishal has been living in. Their relationship reflects the desperate humans when they search for something and raise the essential and equivocal matter of love and duty.
The second lead, Vishal, portrayed the character of Vishal, supported by Kalaiyarasan, who demonstrated excellent acting skills in’ the movie *Madras*. He has done a very good job of depicting a soldier who struggles between being loyal to his country and developing a pessimistic attitude towards the war. Neeru Bajwa and Vishal’s performance is exemplary, especially the psychological torture Vishal goes through in the second half of the movie.
Maya’s acting in portraying Anu is very calm yet very effective in conveying the message. Her character can be viewed as a personification of hope, compassion, and the importance of life. It is also important to mention that her character is depicted as a moral compass in a society where the principles have disappeared. Kalaiyarasan and Maya’s chemistry brings in emotional depth to the film, while their love story provides a soul to the turmoil.
The incredible Jeyanth and Satna Titus lend good support with character deficiencies but are not so adequately depicted in comparison to the stellar pair. They have roles to play in the rest of the screenplay, but the film is mostly about Vishal’s transformation.
Director Kalyaan pretty much dares himself to adopt a relevant theme that is reflected today and even venturing into the future, a depressing future that is. His vision is clear: It is always an attempt to make the audience think. He does it well, keeping in mind that he works in a minimalist way. The focal point here can barely be on the message that is ending wars rather than grand battle scenes. It must be noted that, although the movie has a rather slow tempo, the script contains enough suspense and inner reflection to maintain the viewers’ interest.
However, it could be said that the film’s second part is less compelling than its first part; some of the plots seem to be underdeveloped. Nevertheless, with all the flaws that can be mentioned, Kalyaan gives a good start to his career as the director and demonstrates the material for future successful films in the Tamil industry.
Given that Kadaisi Ulaga Por is a low budget film, it is remarkable that the visuals work out well for the movie. Environmental design and mood have been rather well thought out and implemented, and dystopia, which is set, definitely reflects gloom and despair. Cinematographer *Gopi Amarnath* does well capturing the effects of war and paints war-torn backgrounds using natural light and hand-held cameras that give the battles a realistic feel.
The music played by K is very effective while at the same time unintrusive in order not to compromise the kind of feeling that the film is trying to pass across to the audience. The background music prevents incidences of tension and brooding to rise to increased levels, especially when Vishal faces his internal battles. The sounds are exceptionally helpful in engaging the viewers into the experiences of the protagonists, and there is not much music as the actual noise of war is imposed on the viewer’s ears.
The film Kadaisi Ulaga Por that was released in the year 2016 was also appreciated by the critics as well as the audience, but not to a great extent. As many saw it, the thought-provoking plot of the movie and great idea to address the world problems were highly valued, whereas some viewers complained about the slow pace and some inconsistencies in the film. While some complained that the movie is too dark, others applauded itsEach of the critics is offering their opinion on the film, either focusing on the darkness of the film or the realism of it and a message conveyed through the movie.
Speaking about its merits, Kadaisi Ulaga Por might be appreciated for its reckless approach, which was absent in most of the movies to be merely sold as products in the growing commercial cinema. It cannot be counted as a blockbuster hit, but it got the audience who was interested in a serious view of a prospective future.
Kadaisi Ulaga Por might not be a run-of-the-mill Tamil movie that you would watch in mainstream cinema, but it is an attempt from the filmmaker to try blending science fiction with realities. In my opinion, the film has a clear agenda based on the role of human beings and their morality, along with the consequences of pollution, among others. Despite this, it is a movie that is perfect for the audience that will enjoy the slow pace and the provoking plot.
Given the present socio-political climate of the globe affected by climate change, resource scarcity, and the effects of wars, Kadaisi Ulaga Por's own timeliness is even heavier, as the story is an important warning for future generations.
